Now it feels like the season has really started!
The first title match of 2018 has been and gone, with another very much on the horizon and threatening to boil over before it even gets started.
But what has been going on away from the movie trivia arena? Catch up with all the latest news from around the world of the Schmoedown…
BEAST EYES PROFESSOR SHOWDOWN
William Bibbiani remains the Schmoedown’s great enigma. One of the most accurate competitors in the history of the competition, a failure to convert encouraging opening salvos means he now sits on a 3-4 record following his defeat to Drew McWeeny.
Debate has raged as to who “The Beast” should face upon his return to singles action after tumbling down the rankings, with the blog championing a Horsemen-based battle against Matt Knost as a sensible next step.
Bibbiani, though, has other ideas if his wide-ranging interview with the Schmoedown Rundown is anything to go by.
As well as throwing some shade towards Ben Bateman, “The Beast” turned his attention towards Lon Harris as he called out “The Professor” given his penchant for only taking on those with negative records.
“You have not seen the last of me and you’ll be seeing me a lot sooner than you think,” he said.
“I do want a rematch with Drew but I don’t know what this did to our rankings, so I think we should do battle again when we are equal.
“I’m down a bit, but the good thing about that is that the people at the bottom are not very good! I might actually have a chance, and I’m happy to take on anyone from Ken Napzok to Jason Inman.
“What is interesting is a certain opponent who looks suspiciously like me has specifically said that he is not interested in being a contender and wants to play people down at the bottom of the rankings. Well guess who’s there now, Lon Harris?!
“You don’t have to challenge me – maybe you’re too scared. I’m right there in your refrigerator, eating your pizza…”
Whether Harris steps up to the challenge or continues to instead expand his acolytes before making a push for the belt remains to be seen, but there is certainly part of this writer that would be intrigued to see two competitors who have both claimed to be the smartest person within the Schmoedown at one point or another go at it.
FREE LOVE FOR ALL
With just over a month to go until the first major event of the Schmoedown season, excitement is growing around the second annual Free 4 All.
Last season’s inaugural Royal Rumble-based showdown produced some of the most epic moments in movie trivia history, and it has been suggested that the 2018 version will be even bigger and better than last year’s.
While no competitors have officially been announced as competing as yet, one admission from the league has thrown fan speculation into overdrive as it was revealed there would be a married couple competing against one another during the event.
Many fans unsurprisingly presumed that meant Jason Inman and Ashley Robinson – the only married couple to have both competed within the Schmoedown – would both be appearing, though the Innergeekdom champion has moved to play down those rumours.
Others speculated that Ashley Franco might be joining husband Tim in entering the ring while All The Belts duo Dan Bruner and Alia Moore have not ruled out making their debuts.
The smart money, though, is on Jenn Sterger making the step from interviewer to competitor during the event, with new husband Cody Decker set to make his long-anticipated bow alongside.
Pro-baseball star Decker has been hinting for some time that he is keen to throw his hat into the ring and show what he can do, and the Free 4 All seems the perfect opportunity for him to do just that. Whether he can back up his bravado remains to be seen, however!
HEAD HONCHOS TO TEAM UP?
While the Schmoedown continues to chug along nicely, the upheaval at Collider HQ has dominated the conversation among fans of the channel that houses the best YouTube-based movie trivia/WWE show around.
Monday’s ‘Town Hall’ episode moved to explain the changes that have taken place at the company over recent months as new CEO Marc Fernandez opened up on his acquisition of Collider.
Unsurprisingly the Schmoedown came up on a number of occasions, with Fernandez even hinting that he could even be interested in emerging as a competitor within the team division alongside editor in-chief of Collider.com, Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub.
“I love the Schmoedown. I’ve actually tried to get him [Weintraub] to be my partner in the team matches,” he said.
“I’ve always wanted Frosty as my partner as he knows his s**t!”
Weintraub did jokingly respond that he in fact had never been asked to partner Fernandez, but with Schmoedown fans having called for “Frosty” to join the league for some time, this could yet be the start of his journey into the world of competitive movie trivia…
